Last April, the Department of Family and Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Montefiore Medical Center, launched a new, online publication, Pulse--voices from the heart of medicine, a unique, timely and free e-magazine and web site (www.pulsemagazine.org) featuring first-person accounts of illness, health and encounters with our health care system. The publication celebrates its first anniversary with more than 3,000 subscribers from around the nation.

Geared to medical and lay audiences alike, Pulse is the result of three years’ planning by its editor-in-chief Paul Gross, M.D. and publisher Peter Selwyn, M.D., MPH, both faculty members at Einstein and physicians at Montefiore. The online publication’s high caliber stories reflect the work of an editorial staff composed of physicians, nurses, psychologists, and patients from all over the country–some with national reputations as writers and editors–who feel passionately about Pulse’s role in influencing the future of medicine.

The publication does so by telling the story of medicine through the eyes of patients, caregivers, doctors, nurses and mental health professionals. Every Friday, subscribers receive a new issue of Pulse, featuring one personal story or poem about giving or receiving health care. The stories are op-ed length, immediate, and professionally edited with busy readers in mind. In addition, Pulse readers are invited to post comments as well as to submit their own stories.
