The last anchor event of this year’s Municipal Credit Union Municipal Sports Series was played at KeySpan Park. A crowd of 4,800 watched the annual contest between baseball teams from the NYPD and the FDNY, the former of whom was the victor, with a score of 5 to 1.

This was the 10th annual baseball game between New York’s Bravest and Finest, and the eighth played at KeySpan Park, 1904 Surf Avenue, set against the nostalgic backdrop of Coney Island’s beachfront and amusement park.

KeySpan Park is home to the Brooklyn Cyclones, a NY Mets minor league team.

MCU also sponsored the FDNY/NYPD Hockey game played in March at Nassau Coliseum, and the FDNY/NYPD Annual Fun City football game in late spring at Hofstra University. The Municipal Sports series was started three years ago, and this year was expanded to also include sponsorship of two NYC Department of Sanitation football games which were played last spring against teams from the FDNY and NYPD, respectively.

All of these events raise funds for charities to support their members. In addition to providing promotional support, MCU also donates directly to support charities, such as the Police and Fire Fighter Widow and Children’s Benefit Fund. Some events are also promoted in mass media with MCU’s advertising partners.

The Municipal Sports Series is a part of a broad and unified effort by MCU to get its staff and financial services closer to the members that it serves. As civil servants don sports uniforms and clash for a cause, MCU uses the opportunity to reach out and interact with its members. MCU staffers welcome game goers with special offers and give-aways and often field questions about MCU services and products.
