Ron Kim drops bid for Liu’s seat

Ron Kim, a legislative aid to Gov. David Paterson, announced this morning that he has dropped out of the race for John Liu’s City Council seat, citing party unity as September’s Democratic primary approaches.
Kim released this statement regarding his decision:
“I spent the last few weeks assessing my role as a candidate for City Council and have decided that at this point, I can best serve the residents of Queens by returning to my role at the Governor’s office. Secondly, I would like to promote solidarity among Democrats in this district by stepping aside. This is a challenging time for Queens and I plan to keep fighting for the resources and policies that will help us flourish. I will continue to have an open door to concerned citizens and look forward to working together to strengthen this extraordinary community of ours. I would especially like to thank my staff, friends, and supporters for everything they have provided me over the last few months.”
Kim did not say if he would be throwing his support behind former Liu Chief of Staff John Choe, who received the Queens Democratic Organization’s endorsement last month.
Just last week, Kim welcomed Choe to the race and said he looked forward to debating him in the march towards the primary. There are now six Democrats registered for the District 20 race with the city Campaign Finance Board: Choe, community activist S.J. Jung, education advocate Yen Chou, Democratic District Leader James Wu, Holly Civic Association President Isaac Sasson and Constantine Kavadas.
