Sears earns dual UFT endorsement with Dromm

In an unusual move, the United Federation of Teachers has backed City Councilwoman Helen Sears (D-Jackson Heights) in her bid for re-election after throwing their support behind Jackson Heights teacher Daniel Dromm when he announced his candidacy last year.
The UFT, which insiders said traditionally endorses incumbents, also continues to back Dromm.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the United Federation of Teachers,” Sears said in a statement. “We have worked hard together to create stronger schools, and I am proud to say we have made great progress. There is still much work left to be done, but I know that with dedication and unity we will continue to move our education system forward. The UFT is also one of the greatest advocates for the dignity of labor and the principles of fairness and equality, and it has been my privilege to stand with them in fighting for our working men and women. In these tough economic times, it is more important than ever that we continue to work alongside such strong partners as the UFT to ensure that every New Yorker earn a living wage and be given the opportunity to succeed.”
Dromm touted his status as the only challenger of an incumbent to win the UFT’s backing.
“As an educator and activist, I am incredibly proud to receive the UFT’s endorsement,” he said in a statement. “As the only City Council challenger anywhere in the city to win the UFT’s support, I know they have enormous hope for our campaign to bring new leadership and energy to Queens.”
